When June moved to Snohomish in early 2024, she didn’t know a soul. But she knew where to start. The Mill Creek Family YMCA. 

“The YMCA is the first thing I joined when I moved,” she says. “I signed up for Silver Sneakers right away.” 

It wasn’t long before June saw an invite for volunteers to read stories in the preschool program. For someone with a heart for children and a history of giving back, it was a perfect fit. 

“I’ve always loved working with children, and volunteering is in my blood,” June says. She stepped into the role with joy and her own signature knock on the classroom door. That knock now signals excitement that “Grammy June Bug” has arrived. 

Using books from the “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” series, June makes each session interactive. “Every week, a child gets to add something to the Old Lady’s belly. It keeps them engaged and helps them remember the story.” Afterward, she stays for a dance video with the kids, which was fun for them and fulfilling for her. 

Her service is more than just sharing a story with some of the youngest YMCA members, it’s a lifeline for connection. In a time when loneliness is on the rise, June’s presence brings joy, stability, and warmth to the classroom.  

“Volunteering keeps me motivated and involved,” she reflects. “It allows me to feel connected to my community in so many ways. The internal rewards are so fulfilling.”
