Free Hour of Code Events Inspire Future Innovators

Everett, WA. December 10, 2024 — YMCA of Snohomish County is excited to host Hour of Code, a global movement to demystify coding and inspire youth to explore computer science, at branches across the county. These free events are taking place this week during Computer Science Education Week and welcome children from kindergarten through 12th grade to engage in fun, interactive coding challenges.

“Our goal is to spark excitement in kids of all ages about STEM and show them that coding is something they can actually do,” said Lauren Hunter, STEM Program Manager, YMCA of Snohomish County. “We want younger kids to find joy in creating and older students to see the potential of computer science as a career path.”

The Hour of Code events are designed to empower participants through engaging, browser-based challenges that cater to all skill levels. Coders will enjoy a fun, festive atmosphere with games and giveaways. Each event includes:

  • Guided Coding Challenges: Tailored for ages K-12, with advanced options in Python for older participants.
  • Technology Support: Pre-registration allows families to request access to Chromebooks, if needed.
  • Community and Camaraderie: The event is open to the community and introduces youth to other YMCA programs, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Bringing this event to the Y is the brainchild of local volunteer Greg Bulmash, who has brought invaluable expertise and resources from his experience working with kids and coding. Although his kids’ programming club, Seattle CoderDojo, is no longer operating, Bulmash generously donated its remaining funds to provide 20 Chromebooks, ensuring that every child – regardless of access to personal devices – can participate in the event.

“Through initiatives like Hour of Code, we’re helping to make STEM education accessible and achievable for all,” said Hunter. “Bringing a variety of STEM opportunities to youth in Snohomish County is one of our team’s top priorities.”

Pre-registration is encouraged to secure a spot, but walk-ins are welcome if space permits. With momentum building, the Y envisions making the Hour of Code annual tradition, extending its reach and impact year after year.
