Coupeville, WA. April 8, 2025 — On Saturday, April 19, from 10 am to 2 pm, community members across Whidbey Island are invited to YMCA Camp Casey for a free, family-friendly Earth Day celebration. Set against the backdrop of one of the island’s most scenic locations, the event promises hands-on environmental experiences, local partnerships, and a shared spirit of stewardship.
Born from a simple conversation over coffee with a longtime islander, the Earth Day event grew into something much bigger: a shared space for organizations, families, and changemakers to connect around a common cause.
“We’re tapping into what already makes Whidbey special — strong partnerships, community spirit, and a deep love for this island,” said Jake Carlson, Executive Director of Camp Casey. “This is about celebrating and strengthening those roots.”
Attendees can walk the beach while learning about marine life, scan the skies for birds at Crockett Lake, or explore preservation efforts firsthand in the heritage forest and Admiralty Inlet Preserve. Throughout the day, over 20 local organizations will offer immersive activities grounded in the themes of Educate, Celebrate, Collaborate, and Activate — giving guests the chance to learn, connect, and take meaningful action for the environment.
Participating Organizations: Whidbey Camano Land Trust, Sound Water Stewards, Tulalip Tribes Natural Resources, Pacific Rim Institute, Orca Network, Whidbey Audubon Society, Whidbey Climate ACTION, Price Sculpture Forest, Sno-Isle Sierra Club, Island Transit, Whidbey Island Kayaking, South Whidbey Tilth, Whidbey Environmental Action Network, Whidbey Forest Friends, WSU Extension Master Gardeners, Island County Noxious Weed Control Board, Island County Public Health, Girl Scouts of Western Washington, Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island, Whidbey Watershed Stewards, MICAH, and YMCA Camp Casey.
With a kids’ zone hosted by South Whidbey Parks and Rec and food for purchase available from local favorites like Whidbey Provisions and Bearly Awake Coffee Company, there’s something for every age and interest.
“When people leave Camp Casey on Earth Day, we want them to feel energized — like they did something meaningful today, and they know what to do next,” Carlson added.
The event is supported by a generous donation from Puget Sound Energy and accessible via Island Transit, which stops directly at Camp Casey. Rain or shine, all are welcome.
