Destress and Reset at the Y During National Stress Awareness Month

Everett, WA. March 30, 2023 – In recognition of National Stress Awareness Month, the YMCA of Snohomish County is inviting the community to Destress and Reset at one of its six locations. Countless studies show that physical activity and social connection relieve stress, tension, anxiety and depression.

“Stress in life is inevitable, so how you handle it is critical to your health,” said Gael Gebow, Association Director of Healthy Living & Membership Advancement. “The Y provides opportunities for physical activity and connection, two components that help combat stress, as well as other health challenges.”

The Y offers a full menu of options for regular physical activity for all ages, supporting whole body health and wellness. From group exercise classes to pickleball, youth sports to swimming lessons, there is something for everyone.

National Stress Awareness Month has been recognized in April for over 30 years to bring attention to the negative impact of stress. While not all stress is bad, long-term stress can have harmful effects on physical and mental health. By increasing awareness around how to deal with stress in a positive way, the Y is promoting a healthier community.

“All of our programs, classes, and events are designed to improve the quality of life of our members and participants,” said Gebow. “Healthier community members benefit the greater community. You might initially join the Y to focus on physical fitness, but you’ll discover so many more benefits.”

Social connection is foundational at the Y as members build community every day within each facility. According to the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, social support and feeling connected can help people decrease depressive symptoms, improve overall mental health, and maintain physical health.

“I’m a huge proponent of the Y for so many reasons,” said Gebow. “There are few places where you can improve health and wellness, make new friends, and find a vibrant, uplifting community.”
