  • Everett Family YMCA Selects General Contractor for New Facility
    3/20/2017

The YMCA of Snohomish County Board of Trustees recently ratified the selection of Puyallup-based Absher Construction Company as general contractor for the new Everett Family YMCA on the property located at 4730 Colby Avenue in Everett.

EVERETT, Wash., March 20, 2017 – The YMCA of Snohomish County Board of Trustees recently ratified the selection of Puyallup-based Absher Construction Company as general contractor for the new Everett Family YMCA on the property located at 4730 Colby Avenue in Everett.

The YMCA secured ownership of the 8-acre parcel in November 2015; the site of the former Everett Public Schools administration offices.

“The YMCA is central to a healthy and connected community, and we’re honored to be a part of the team to build the Everett Branch,” said Curt Gimmestad, Corporate Executive for the YMCA project and Director of Operations, Absher. “This project is an excellent opportunity to fulfill our core purpose at Absher, ‘To create and build community through teamwork, leadership, and experience.’”

Absher will work with the YMCA of Snohomish County and BCRA Architects to provide preconstruction services including cost estimating, value engineering, constructability review, subcontractor procurement and community outreach, as well as providing safety management, quality control, and commissioning during the construction phase.

“We are pleased to be working with Absher Construction,” said Darren Redick, Board Member, YMCA Board of Trustees. “We completed a very detailed RFP process and Absher demonstrated an exceptional understanding of the project and presented a very thorough proposal.”

Absher has experience with other large recreation and aquatic venues including the Mel Korum YMCA in Puyallup, the Snohomish Aquatic Center, Great Wolf Lodge, and the Boardman Recreation Center in Oregon.

The new facility will offer needed space and amenities to better serve youth, teens, families, adults, and seniors and will expand the people served by the branch from 12,700 to more than 32,000.

    • Thousands of youth in our community come to the Y seeking a safe place and meaningful relationships. The new Everett YMCA will provide more space to encourage interactions between people of all ages and backgrounds.
    • The Y is the place to go to improve health, no matter what your age or ability. The new Everett YMCA will better meet the health and wellness needs of our increasingly diverse and growing community.
    • The current YMCA facility is difficult to access for people with physical challenges or diverse abilities. The new Everett YMCA will be more accessible with elevator access, wider hallways, and a safer more inclusive design.
    • By providing permanent mentoring space, our valued collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County will connect a broader community to the lasting impact of mentorship. It will be a safe place for “Bigs” and “Littles” to enjoy healthy activities together.

If fundraising goals are met, construction on the new Everett location will begin in the summer of 2018, and it will open late 2019.
