Ernie Oosterveen, Y Member

Home Away from Home

Ernie Oosterveen was raised by his grandparents in San Antonio, Texas. “We lived in a tough part of town. Gang members would throw rocks at us and carry chains for fighting.” His uncle took him to the Y so that he could have a safe place with positive role models.

“I was pretty wild in those days. I didn’t want anyone to beat me. The Y staff taught me fair play, discipline, and good sportsmanship.”

Ernie spent long hours at the Y, excelling at baseball and basketball. He earned a sports scholarship to the University of Arizona, and was the first person in his family to attend college and graduate.

“I was one of the first to join the Mukilteo Y. It’s a home away from home for me.”

At the Y, we exist to strengthen community. Together with people like you, we nurture the potential of kids, help people understand and improve their health, and provide opportunities to give back and support our neighbors.
