Linda Huskey, Cancer Survivor

Taking Steps to Become a Runner

Linda Huskey had serious health issues, including a cancer diagnosis in 2002, but it was a doctor’s warning about her pre-diabetic condition that propelled her to action. She knew she needed a supportive team to help her reach her health goals, and that’s just what she found at the Y.

As a cancer survivor, she participated in LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, eventually becoming a mentor to others. Linda broadened her support network with group exercise classes that provided accountability. Her instructors encouraged her to reach for exercise goals she previously thought were impossible.

Linda has now completed a triathlon and a half marathon, and has lost more than 100 pounds. Even more importantly than what she lost is what she gained — a supportive community at the Y.

At the Y, we exist to strengthen community. Together with people like you, we nurture the potential of kids, help people understand and improve their health, and provide opportunities to give back and support our neighbors.
