Weyni, MAP Teen

A Family First

Weyni was born in Africa, and raised by Ethiopian parents in Sudan. Her family immigrated to Washington in the 90s. In the fall of 2009, Weyni became one of the first Minority Achievers Program (MAP) participants at Mariner High School and visited her first college campus that spring.

In June of 2012, Weyni graduated from Mariner High School and received a scholarship from the YMCA to attend college. In the fall of 2012, she started attending Western Washington University, and she hopes to be the first generation in her family to graduate college.

“If it wasn’t for MAP, I would have never considered applying to Western. Now, I’m going there!”

At the Y, we exist to strengthen community. Together with people like you, we nurture the potential of kids, help people understand and improve their health, and provide opportunities to give back and support our neighbors.
