Luke, Camp Participant

Coming Out of His Shell

Luke has Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Bi-Polar Disorder. These disorders often create serious challenges at school, and as a result, Luke was asked to leave his school because of behavioral problems.

“He got really down on himself and missed his friends,” says Heidi Meyer, Luke’s mom.

Luke received a skateboard as a gift, but was never that interested in sports. When Heidi saw that the Y had a skateboard camp, she signed him up.

“I told the Y camp staff in advance what Luke’s issues were, and the best way to respond. They were great! He came out of his shell and got excited about skateboarding. He excelled, made friends, and was confident.”

“We learned something new every day,” says Luke. “It was scary, but I got it!”

At the Y, we exist to strengthen community. Together with people like you, we nurture the potential of kids, help people understand and improve their health, and provide opportunities to give back and support our neighbors.
