Julissa, MAP Teen

Little Steps Make A Big Difference

Julissa dreams of going to the University of Washington and becoming an interpreter. Her inspiration? Watching her parents struggle. Julissa is the only one in my family who speaks English. “For me, family is first.”

With her busy family life and no one at home to help with homework in English, her grades suffered. She was getting C’s and below. Julissa discovered the YMCA Minority Achievers Program. MAP provides after school homework help, career mentors, scholarship assistance, and college visits.

“They help you a lot and tell you never give up and try your hardest.”

Now Julissa is getting A’s and B’s and is on track to be the second person in her extended family to go to college. She wants to mentor younger MAP kids, “To show them that taking a little step can make a big difference.”

At the Y, we exist to strengthen community. Together with people like you, we nurture the potential of kids, help people understand and improve their health, and provide opportunities to give back and support our neighbors.
